POODLE HISTORY

The poodle is one of the oldest breeds. The single color and bi-color poodles have a similar history. Contrary to popular belief the poodle is not a French dog, however they are the national dog of France. The Poodle originates from the German word "pudelhund" meaning "to splash about". In England they were known as "Rough Water Dogs" but the breed was standardized in France where they were known long before they were brought to England. The Bi-color or Parti color were found on Roman and Greek art. Drawings by German artist Albrecht Durer established the popular image of the breed in the 15th and 16th centuries. They were also found in Russia. Poodle ancestors were Bi-colored; white with black markings.

Writings, drawings and paintings from the 1700's and 1800's have many examples of the the parti-color Poodle.

STANDARD OF THE BI-COLOR AND PARTI POODLE

Miniature Harlequin Poodle

The original poodles came in three colors; either solid black, solid white or black and white in combination on one dog. This gave them the term Parti Color. They are mostly white with black markings. If they have small black spots on the body, it is not the result of cross breeding but when two Bi-colored poodles are mated.

TUXEDOS - HARLEQUIN - PHANTOM

When one breeds two black individuals, a mutation  may result in an offspring having with the Bi-colored factor. Typically a Tuxedo is recognized by a black "jacket" marking on the back instead of white. From the neck down, the chest and the abdomen, it will resemble a white "shirt". The Tuxedo can also have white paws, lip and one or more toes. They may also have a white crown.

A Toy and miniature Poodle or what is known as medium size, may be black and/or tan. This is usually 80% black and 20% tan. That is the body with a solid black color with markings only on the eyebrows, under the tail and tan toes. This is a unique three generational mutation with exceptional color markings

The Phantom poodle has the coloring of a Doberman Pincher with a lighter color appearing on their eyebrows, muzzle, throat, legs and below their tails.
